Vintage Bicycle Concours at LeMay - August 28, 2010

The LeMay Automobile Museum’s 33rd annual open house on Saturday, August 28th will again be the site of our annual Classic Bicycle Concours. The Museum is located in Spanaway Washington, about 40 miles south of Seattle. Our event is open to all Classic American Bicycles with the emphasis placed on Prewar Balloon Tire models.

Each year, in addition to the general field including bicycles from all the major American manufacturers we spotlight a featured make. This year we will be featuring the bicycles produced by both Cleveland Welding and H.P. Snyder/D.P. Harris. The primary brands offered by these companies were, respectively, Roadmaster and Rollfast but each produced bicycles under a wide range of badges and for a wide range of retailers including much of the popular Montgomery Ward’s Hawthorne bicycle line.

Entrance/Admission

Admission to the LeMay Open House is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 6-12. With your admission you will receive an event bracelet which allows you access to both sites. The money LeMay generates with the event goes to local charities and the entrance fee applies to both attendees and participants. We charge no additional fees for the Concours but one of the requirements for our participation is that everyone associated with our display purchase an admission ticket. As we will be arriving and setting up before the gates open to the public please make sure to purchase an admission ticket and wrist band when the admissions booths open.

Site Access and Setup

While setup for the event is available to us beginning on Friday, August 27th, we have found that the security concerns regarding leaving our bikes unattended on the site overnight outweigh the advantages of early setup. Last year we were able to get the bikes onsite and complete our setup Saturday morning and it is our intention to do so again this year. Unfortunately this means that we have a short window of time Saturday morning to get all of our bikes and everything else onto the grounds.

Between Sun-up, at approximately 6:00am, and 8:00am site access will be available to our group through the Southeast Gate (This entrance is marked with the "Marymount" sign – drive 1/4 mile past the first marked driveway and look for this sign on the left)

The gate will be closed to traffic at that time and Ron Summer (or his stunt double) and additional volunteers will be at the entrance to the gate to help unload bicycles and direct participants to the site which is approximately 200 feet from the gate.

During this time on-street parking should still be available along 152nd Street SE beyond the entrance road at this time and parking along 152nd near the gate will make exiting the event easier than parking in one of the provided event lots.

By 8:00 am cars associated with club displays are starting to line up at the gate and parking and access will become much more difficult. At 8:00am volunteers will be relocated to the display site to help with registration and set-up

The LeMay Open House officially begins at 9am.

Display Equipment

VBE will place stanchions and ropes; along with the natural hedges these should deter people from touching the bicycles. VBE will provide tent stakes to pin drop and side stands on the lawn. Our display area is a flat surface but we encourage the use of stakes to provide extra security against spills. For display, judging, and people's choice, VBE will provide a Display marker for each bicycle.

VBE will have an EZ-up canopy for display and security purposes with tables and a few chairs. Elsewhere on the grounds there are several places to escape the sun, rest and eat. If you require an EZ-up or any other special considerations for yourself or your bike please let us know as soon as possible

Knock-Down

Knock down will begin Saturday at 5:01pm. Please be prepared to be patient as we will have to get vehicles to the display site, load, and off the site all while everyone else is doing the same. The VBE staff is committed to being on site till the last bike is packed and gone.

SITE ACCESS AND SETUP

In past years we have initiated our setup on Friday night. This year it is our intention to avoid having to secure the bicycles overnight and limit setup to Saturday morning.

Saturday, August 29th, Site Access

Please be informed: Because of the enormity of this event, The LeMay museum employs a large staff of volunteers during the show. Without the generosity of these people an event this size would be impossible. For the well being of all the staff and visitors, these volunteers have been entreated to direct visitors regarding the museums rules regarding the use of the site, access and egress control, and general public safety.

Two years ago there were several complaints from the LeMay Museum volunteer staff about rude behavior exhibited by some members of the Vintage Bicycle group. Please be courteous to all LeMay staff and follow any directions offered by them. If a problem does arise, please follow the directions given and contact Ron or myself so we can work out problems at the proper level.

Another issue that was brought to our attention is that anyone arriving and setting up before the gates open to the public should make sure they purchase an admission ticket and wrist band when the admissions booths open. One of the requirements for our participation is that everyone associated with our display purchase an admission ticket. It will be bad form if members of our group are on the grounds for the event without having paid admission.
